Getting started

What is Knots?

Knots is a Fajr alarm and prayer-focused sleep app, built on the hadith of the three knots (Sahih al-Bukhari 1142). It turns waking for Fajr, through dhikr, wudu and prayer, into an alarm that only stops for the sunnah, not for your thumb.

Is Knots free?

Prayer times, qibla, and prayer tracking are free forever. The full Fajr wake ritual (recitation check, wudu match), sleep tools, and Screen Time blocking are part of Knots Premium: £9.99/year with a 7-day free trial.

How do I join the beta?

Knots isn't on the App Store yet. Join the early testers group on WhatsApp and we'll get you set up with a build.

Do I need an account?

Yes. Knots uses Sign in with Apple to create a lightweight account. It keeps your Knots Premium subscription, settings, and prayer streaks in sync if you use the app on more than one device.

The Fajr wake ritual

Why won't my alarm snooze?

That's by design. The Fajr alarm keeps ringing through Silent and Focus modes until you complete the ritual. There's no swipe-to-dismiss, because none of the three knots are undone by your thumb.

What if I can't recite the du'a aloud without waking other people?

You don't have to say it out loud. On the recitation step, tap "Can't say it aloud? Type it instead" to complete that knot silently.

The sink-match camera doesn't recognise my sink. What do I do?

Re-register your sink from Settings in good, consistent lighting: the same lighting you'll actually be in at Fajr time. If it keeps failing, email us with your device model and we'll look into it.

Does Knots record my voice or my photos?

No. The waking du'a is recognised with on-device speech recognition. The audio itself is never uploaded. The sink-match feature compares an on-device image signature; your photos aren't uploaded either.

Prayer times & sleep

How are my prayer times calculated?

On your device, from your location. You choose the calculation method and madhab in Settings, and Knots recomputes locally. Nothing is sent to a server to work out your times.

What is auto-seasonal sleep?

Fajr and Isha drift with the seasons, sometimes by hours between summer and winter. Auto-seasonal sleep follows that drift automatically: your bedtime, last-third wake, and Fajr alarm all reset themselves as daylight changes, so you're never running a schedule that's quietly gone stale.

Can I set a manual bedtime instead?

Yes. Auto-seasonal is the default, but you can override bedtime, the last-third wake, and individual alarms from the Alarms tab at any time.

Blocking apps at prayer time

How does app blocking work?

You choose which apps to pause during each prayer window using Apple's Screen Time. They unlock the moment you mark that prayer as prayed. Knots can't see whether you actually prayed, so marking it is between you and Allah.

Can I unlock early if I need an app urgently?

Yes, you can unlock with intention from the lock screen if you genuinely need to. It's self-managed and always removable from Settings; Knots isn't a parental-control tool.

Does Knots see what apps I use?

No. Blocking runs through Apple's Screen Time on your device, and no data about your app usage leaves your phone or reaches us.

Knots Premium & billing

What's included in Premium vs the free version?

Free forever: prayer times, qibla, and prayer tracking. Premium (£9.99/year, 7 days free): the full Fajr wake ritual, sleep tools, Screen Time app-blocking, and Fajr streaks & insights.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are billed and managed through your Apple ID, not by us. Cancel any time in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Knots Premium.

I paid but Premium isn't unlocking. What now?

Open Settings inside Knots and tap "Restore purchases". This re-checks your Apple ID for an active subscription. If it still doesn't unlock, email us and we'll sort it out.

Privacy & account

Does Knots track me?

We use PostHog for product analytics: understanding which features people use and where things break, so we can improve the app. That's usage analytics, not the content of your recitation, your camera image, or your exact location. Full details are on the privacy policy.

What happens to my data if I delete the app?

Anything stored only on your device (like local prayer history) goes with it. Anything tied to your account (subscription status, synced streaks) stays with your account until you ask us to delete it. Email us and we'll action it.

Still stuck?

Send us your device model and what you were doing when it happened. It saves a round trip.
